I posted about this in the help forum, and got the two following answers from two ProBoards admins - I hope this will help you all:
Email notifications for responses are not a notification option. You however, can bookmark a thread and then have an email sent to you when a bookmark has a new reply.

If members are having trouble receiving email notifications, this is usually due to their email provider blocking the notification emails before they're even able to reach their inbox. One way you can try to combat this would be to add noreply@proboards.com to your email contacts and this generally will help take care of the issue (especially if some are getting them, but others are not)
