I have to say, coolplanet, that at times it seems like this is a perfect storm of stupidity. There are so many elements that come together to have created so much stupidity that it seems impossible to make any progress against it.
For starters, there is the commitment that we have toward capitalism. In a way, capitalism rocks. Having people work to make themselves a better life, and to make the responsible commitment is a great idea. But something, somewhere went terribly wrong, and this problem has showed us that we are unable make adjustments necessary in order to reconcile our actions with the Laws of Physics. We cannot continually dump GHGs into the atmosphere without end and pay no consequence to our health, and to our ecology.
Second, there is this loss in capacity to listen to the most attuned people. It seems that this loss is centered around people who say what is needed most. For example, if one of us begins to say we need to lower GHG emissions, then we become targets for abuse of our credibility. Certainly, there is a loss, or an inhibition in teaching and in learning what is needed to take care of ourselves. There has been a conditioning in society that attacks the credibility of our best scientists. With the loss of scientists comes a loss our best strategies for protection.
There is a destabilization of our weather patterns the loss of which doesn not allow the structures we build to stand. We have to live with tornadoes, hurricanes, firestorms, and phenomena such as Sandy which we do not even understand. Insurance is supposed to save us from this, but there is only so much available in insurance. The money runs out.
There will come a day when the most important people in our lives, which of course are the laborers, begin to lose their function in society in the growing heat. People lose their productivity in heat for a number of reasons. Heat affects laborers in a various number of ways. Bodies becomes heat stressed, people lose their minds, and so forth. The body is not particularly well adapted to work in heat. I much prefer doing my most difficult labor when it is cold out.
Then there is a similar loss within the animal and plant kingdoms. Plants are physically adapted and suited to the environment in which they normally grow. There can be some adjustments through evolution, but the adjustments don't necessarily favor the health and environment of mankind.
The people making decisions don't understand what they are getting into because their lives are protected from labor. They can sit in air-conditioned rooms and sip their Mai Tais in their lawn chairs without doing anything physical. If something needs to be done they order up some laborers as if they were french fries.
Then there is this condition in which even democracy begins to fail in our government. A majority of people already want to take action against climate change, but they cannot simply because there is this constant betrayal of our political leadership.
I'm sure many people can think of more. In all it seems to amount to a perfect storm of stupidity. The damage we are creating is irreversible. In a hundred years we will be fortunate if there will be a few places left over where people can hide from the heat and remain fit for survival. I imagine those few places will be taken by force by the most hostile.

What is even sadder is I heard on the News yesterday that 2000 - 2010 was the warmest decade ever recorded in history, and instead of recognize that it's due to global climate change, they indicated that more study is needed. Jeepers if they just continue to study whether these hot temperatures and severe weather occurrences are the result of global climate change, by the time they come to any conclusion it's going to be too late to do anything about it.
