They just plain don't care. It really is that simple. They find ways to justify themselves, telling themselves it's "their own fault", etc., etc. But the bottom line is just that the bottom line with them, it's all about their precious money, and the service to the hierarchy of the monied.

I got food stamps during the 'Bush the first's recession'.
They demanded I have ''separate from anyone else'' food preparation and storage .
I had an ice chest that fell off a BLM fire team truck, which they refused to take back.
When I picked it up beside I-10 and followed them off the freeway, trying to give it back to them.
I had a barrel with top and bottom cut out that I got a grill from a rusted bbq.
Burned wood I picked up in the desert and beside the road.
They accepted that.
Ny neighbors, who robbed me when I wuz in hospital..
He said he told them he paid part of his rent sharing his food with his relative he lived with.
OK with them.
Only I had to follow the rules, to the letter.
They set the rules aside for him.
Seems convicted felons get a break from government law abiding citizens do not.
Aside:
I would kill switch & pull in the clutch, my motorcycle and grab a chicken beside the road from a hispanic family that let their chickens roam free.
Whirlybird the chicken and stuff it into my saddlebags.
That made for dinner.
When I got a job and had money again, I went to apologize and tried to pay them.
They said, they enjoyed watching me and knew I was eating the chickens.
Told me to "help someone else who is having a hard time."
As a way of paying them back.
