11-Year-Old Boy Scout Defeats Santorum at Supermarket Debate
Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum caused controversy today by debating a group of Boy Scouts outside a supermarket in Virginia about their policy on gay rights.
In a 20-minute exchange, Santorum and a group of Scouts argued over the organization's decision to allow membership of openly gay boys - an argument Santorum reportedly lost.
The incident took place outside a Wegmens Food Market in Reston, Va., where some young Boy Scouts were raising money for their annual hike in the Appalachians. As Santorum was exiting the store, the boys asked him for a donation, which he promptly refused.
"I won't be giving money to the Boy Scouts anymore," he replied. "You folks have given into the Gay Agenda. You're part of the problem now.
"First you allow gay scouts into your organization, and then what's next? Polygamists? Child molesters? Urophiliacs? I mean where does it end?"
Be Prepared
The Boy Scouts of America lifted their longstanding ban on openly gay scout members last week, despite heavy opposition from Christian groups that make up a large percentage of its organization.
They kept their ban on gay scout leaders, however, due to continuing resistance within its ranks. Even this concession wasn't enough for Santorum, who told the boys that they were part of an immoral grouping.
"How does it feel kids?" he taunted. "How does it feel to be contributing to the moral collapse of America. Does it make you feel good? Make you feel special?"
Some of the boys began to verbally joust with Santorum, flinging back insults and calling him a "bigot" and a "dinosaur." At one point an 11-year-old scout, Tyler Russell, decided to deliver the coup de grĂ¢ce against Santorum's intolerance.
"Everybody in this country is equal," he declared. "It's not fair to leave people out because of things they can't control. Some people are black, some people are white. Some people are straight, some people are gay. But we're all Americans and we all deserve respect as human beings."
The assembled crowd cheered Tyler's defense of equal rights, and Santorum, sensing that he had lost the crowd, decided to bow out of the debate.
"You know what, I'm done. Whatever," he said meekly. "I have better things to do. See ya later fellas. Say hi to the devil for me in hell."
Santorum is one of America's most noted anti-gay politicians. He represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate between 1994 and 2006 and came in second place to Mitt Romney during the 2012 Republican presidential primaries.
