Conversations w/Great Minds - Peter Van Buren, We Meant Well P1
Part 2
The United States has spent tens of billions of dollars on reconstruction in Iraq - but it might surprise you to find out what some of that money is really going towards. In tonight's Conversations with Great Minds - Thom talks with State Department veteran Peter van Buren about our government's bungled attempts to re-build a post-war Iraq. His new book is We Meant Well: How I Helped Lose the Battle for the Hearts and Minds of the Iraqi People.

My single greatest disappointment was Obama's missed opportunity of the use of soft power. In the second GWB administration there was talk of applying Joseph Nye's concepts to bring a reduction of need for costly police actions such as the one in Iraq. Liberal America had decided Obama, with his experience in Indonesia schools, was the one to do it. The idea was America could co-opt Indonesia with cultural exchange, and then expand into other regions. Instead, I never saw one application of soft power during the Obama's tenure. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soft_powerSeeing no one else was doing it I tried it on my own. I tried to use whatever influence I could gain by using Current, and hence the reason for my posting so much news and entertainment from that part of the world. It wasn't that hard. The problem, I felt, was that I was so alone. I was making friends overseas while not getting anywhere with people at home.
