John McWhorter: Txtng is killing language. JK!!!
Published on 22 Apr 2013
Does texting mean the death of good writing skills? John McWhorter posits that there's much more to texting -- linguistically, culturally -- than it seems, and it's all good news.

FWIW in conveying ideas in a short space then txt is useful BTW, but OTOH if the ideas are compressed also then it becomes a problem. As long as it doesn't become as bad as "Newspeak" where the ideas are squeezed out and complex ideas are replaced by shallow language that can't express them.

Whenever I think of txting I think of Sarah Palin.

Isn't that the opposite? Palin is the very definition of shallow and dogmatic.
All her efforts have been to spread the kind of "Newspeak" that allows rigid authoritarians to manipulate others for their own power.
Palin would've fit in perfectly with the Inquisition burning heretics for going against the church dogma that the Earth was the center of the universe.
She's barely literate herself and if she had her way no one would be able to txt or share information, since all communication would come from those in power.
What John McWhorter was talking about was language evolving from the foundation to a shorthand of ideas that build more concepts from those that have become common.
Text is a shorthand like musical notation and math is for complex ideas

Text is a shorthand like musical notation and math is for complex ideas Wow, I never thought of it that way. Great point! O that Palin. I cringe when I hear what comes out of her mouth. That compilation video was actually painful to watch. The reason I think of Palin whenever I think txting is because her txts are as awful as her speech. Her dumb tweets really crack me up.

That compilation video was actually painful to watch. Her dumb tweets really crack me up. That's because it's more tragic that she takes herself so seriously and has no idea how dumb she sounds. It's only when people like Tina Fey that are being intentionally funny that "crack me up"English has gone through a lot of evolution in it's development like the change from what it was when Shakespeare wrote in it. And still continues to evolve from the influence of the Net and text.

Many businesses are having to make remedial Writing and Grammar training a part of their business.

"Meloves Shakespeare! He turned me on to literature at the age of 16."
An O-L-D man was after you at age 16? God that's just disgusting.
[Yeah, me a Willie like each other too.]
