Rare asteroid with its own moon will terrify Earth-dwellers as it flies by todayAs a certain sci-fi opus once taught us, space is really, really big. By comparison, our planet is a microscopic speck in the universe, and the asteroids zipping around the (possibly) infinite black are even smaller. So, when an asteroid flies near Earth in a place so big and empty — and that asteroid has its own moon — the odds are astronomical. The asteroid known as 1998 QE2 will be flying by Earth later today and come within a distance of 3.6 million miles. For comparison, the distance from the Earth to the Moon is 238,900 miles, and the distance from Earth to the Sun is 92.9 million miles. The asteroid will pass within around 15 times the distance from the Earth to the Moon — or in universe terms, by a thin hair — at an estimated time of 4:59 EST later this evening. NASA said that this is the closest 1998 QE2 will come to Earth in at least the next two centuries. Thankfully, astronomers have stated that even though 1998 QE2 will come very close to Earth, there is no risk of an impact, which is great considering the asteroid is an estimated 1.7 miles in size — a size that would certainly spur Billy Bob Thornton to think outside of the box and hire a ragtag team of offshore drillers to be the space-saviors of Earth. The extinction event thought to kill off the dinosaurs involved a meteor estimated to be anywhere from three to nine miles in size. So, while 1998 QE2 is smaller than the meteor that is believed to have made Earth a friendlier place for tiny humans, the asteroid would still do a number on the planet if it hit. Now, asteroids are fairly interesting when they’re just the standard affair, but 1998 QE2 has something of a special feature: its own moon. A couple of days ago when the asteroid was around 3.7 million miles from Earth, astronomers pointed the 230-foot Deep Space Network antenna to take a gander, and noticed a speck flying around the main asteroid, which measured in at around 0.3 miles in size. Aside from being a rare sight, this moon’s orbit will actually allow astronomers to weigh the main asteroid, which in turn will help astronomers figure out what 1998 QE2 is made of. Asteroids have grazed and glanced off the atmosphere in the last decade. (like a stone skipping over water) They will be back btw US Presidents have been taken to safe bunkers while the rest of us were kept ignorant.
Many asteroids are binary. Each being a moon of the other.
Biggest one is as big as California and Nevada combined.
I've been to meteor crater in AZ (barringer) a few times. That was a small one.
A big one is an extinction event. The melting of the north American ice sheet was caused by something. Asteroid or comet? No scientist with credentials was there to record it, but the oceans suddenly rose enough to flood almost all existing cities in the world overnight.
If one hit Antarctica, we would lose NY, Paris, Rio, Hong Kong, London, etc, No time to flee..

Glacials and interglacials are caused by changes in Earth's orbit around the Sun and tilt of the axis every 100,000 years according to the Milankovic orbital theory.

Let me phrase correctly: "The sudden melting of the north American ice sheet was caused by something. Asteroid or comet..." Greenland was once green and the farmers there grew crops and grazed livestock. Not 100,000 years ago, just 10 centuries back. We are in between ice ages now. Fluctuations are normal. Only the result of humans burning and releasing carbon into the atmosphere is abnormal, and will hurry the next ice age's onset. That sudden melting caused an extremely fast rise in sea levels. What a shame the Atlantis topic no longer exists. That overnight flooding of an island city state is not a result of water rising a few inches, gradually. It was a sudden flood that the entire world has as it's mythology. Noah and otherwise. Those who seek evidence of civilization around 5,000 to 12,000 bc should be looking about 60 feet down under the ocean.

According to orbital theory we should be entering a glaciation. The little ice age (1550-1850) was the beginning but it was stopped by industrial age greenhouse gasses.
From everything I've read on the subject for 30 years now it is impossible for an ice age to advance with atmospheric CO2 levels above 300ppm. Right now we're at 400ppm CO2 rapidly approaching 450ppm. We are entering a hot age not seen for 4 million years.
The movie The Day After Tomorrow is Hollywood fiction.

I read private printings from inside the gas, oil, nuke industry, and they believe we are bringing on another ice age by our use of carbon producing fuels. (books like: The Cooling: Has the Next Ice Age Already Begun? by Lowell Ponte ) I worked on five nukes and two coal fired generating stations, the first 5 pump stations on the north slope.... & Places I cannot discuss. The movie is inspired by dead frozen mammoths with buttercups in their mouths, indicating sudden, flash freezing. A climate gone from temperate to arctic in minutes. Of course we disagree. I've argued this with three people with doctorates in history. One student tried to prove me wrong, and his masters' and doctorate thesis were based on that research, which, instead of proving me wrong, proved me right. Everyone has a right to disagree. Especially with me,...

The last ice age ended 12,000 years ago but 1000 years later Earth suddenly plunged back into a deep freeze for 1000 years, wiping out the megafauna. Climate scientists attribute this to an enormous lake (Agassiz) of melting glaciers in Canada unleashing trillions of gallons of fresh water into the north Atlantic, shutting down the Meridional Overturning Circulation and Gulf Stream. The reason it couldn't happen today from melting glaciers is because atmospheric CO2 is at 400ppm whereas 11,000 years ago it was below 200ppm.

I don't mean this as an attack, just a correction.

They did not settle there and name it greenland because it was locked in an ice age. >A regional effect< as the video's speaker noted.
Washington wrote about the luck they had had. that at Valley Forge, they had not to deal with the much colder winters of generations past. (Private viewing of revolutionary war letters, private correspondence /am not exactly a nobody)
Climate fluctuates. Carbon effects of humans is causing an acceleration into the next ice age. That movie is based on historical evidence.
